Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement

Intent

At Samlesbury Church of England Primary School, the PSHE curriculum is taught through a theme-based approach, under the overarching topics of ‘Health and Wellbeing’, ‘Relationships’ and ‘Living in the Wider World’. Our PSHE curriculum brings together citizenship with personal well-being, whilst promoting fundamental British values. Children will be given the opportunities to explore and challenge a range of values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities. Although PSHE is taught through discreet lessons, it also underpins all activities, assemblies, educational visits and extra-curricular clubs. Our intent is to offer a cohesive whole-school approach which enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society.

Our Christian Values and Distinctiveness, alongside our School Mission Statement of ‘Learning, Growing and Inspiring through God’s Love and Grace’, are at the heart of our curriculum and all that we do at Samlesbury.

Implementation

We follow the PSHE Association programme of learning throughout school, which focuses on three core learning themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. This scheme of learning ensures consistency across school and ensures the progression of all learners, including the more able and those with additional needs. Topics are introduced from EYFS and Year 1, and are returned to consistently and developmentally throughout the scheme, in an age- and stage-appropriate way.

Our PSHE lessons also encapsulate the requirements of the DFE for all schools ‘to promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.’

Much of the PSHE curriculum is practical and discussion based, with children’s comments added to a whole class PSHE scrapbook. This also includes evidence of children’s individual work.

The children’s knowledge and understanding is assessed regularly against the success criteria to inform future planning and to share with staff, leaders and parents. This ensures the pitch of lessons is well matched to need and ensures full coverage of the PSHE curriculum.

Early Years Foundation Stage

The provision is planned to ensure development in Physical, Social and Emotional Development (PSED), which occurs daily. In provision, children will explore the ideas of relationships, feelings and appropriate behaviours, self-confidence and self-awareness, rules and routines, and empathy.

Impact

Children are happy learners within PSHE, who can discuss their thoughts and feelings on a range of topics within the curriculum sensitively and respectfully. Fundamental British Values are evident in PSHE and children understand how it can celebrate difference. They demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school and this is evident in the positive behaviour seen across the school, both in the classroom and in the wider school life, including extra-curricular activities.
