School governors play a vital role in the life of our school. They are a group of volunteers who work together with the co-headteachers and school staff to help shape the direction of the school and ensure it provides the best possible education for all children.

Our governing body is made up of parents, staff, and members of the local community, all bringing different skills and experiences to support the school’s success. Together, they help make sure our school is a safe, supportive, and inspiring place to learn and grow.

The Governing Body Instrument of Government states that the school has places for 14 governors. As a Church of England school, the majority of our governors (8) are Foundation Governors, appointed by the Parochial Church Council of St Leonard the Less or by Blackburn Diocese, to uphold the school’s Christian ethos. We also have Parent Governors (2), elected by parents of children at the school, a Staff Governor (1), elected by school staff, a Local Authority Governor (1), nominated by the Local Authority, a Co-opted Governor (1), appointed by the governing body due to their skills and experience,  and the Co-headteachers (who share 1 vote). In total, our Governing Body consists of 14 members.

Responsibilities of the Governing Body

Governors work as a team to:

  • Set the school’s vision and strategic direction, ensuring it aligns with our Christian values.
  • Hold the Co-headteacher to account for the school’s educational performance.
  • Oversee financial performance, ensuring that resources are managed efficiently.
  • Support the spiritual, moral, and cultural development of all pupils, while meeting their individual needs.
  • Ensure the curriculum is broad, balanced, and inclusive for every child.

Governors meet regularly, both as a Full Governing Body and in committees, to discuss progress, plan improvements, and make key decisions. Whilst they are not involved in the day-to-day management of the school, they play a crucial role in shaping its future and maintaining its reputation within the community.
