Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement
Intent
Our intent is to enable pupils to become confident, capable writers who can communicate ideas clearly and creatively for a range of purposes and audiences. Through our curriculum planning, we intend to teach pupils how to:
- write clearly, accurately and coherently;
- develop stamina and control in writing;
- use spelling, punctuation and grammar accurately;
- adapt their writing for different genres and contexts/audiences.
Implementation
Writing is taught through:
- a structured writing process, including planning, drafting, editing and publishing;
- exploration of high-quality model texts that demonstrate language features and authorial style;
- explicit teaching of grammar, punctuation and spelling within meaningful contexts;
- phonics-based spelling in the early years, progressing to spelling rules, patterns and statutory word lists;
- weekly spelling tests for pupils in Years 2-6;
- weekly spelling lessons for pupils in Years 2-6, introducing the spelling rule / pattern for that week, using EdShed;
- Weekly homework set for pupils in Years 3-6 to practise and reinforce their spellings words: this can be done on paper or online using EdShed;
- regular handwriting sessions focusing on correct letter formation, joins and presentation for pupils in Years R – Year 4;
- a continued focus on correct handwriting through Years 5 and 6, with additional support in place for pupils who need this;
- cross-curricular writing opportunities to apply skills in different subjects;
- teacher feedback and opportunities for pupils to edit and improve their work.
Impact
As a result of our writing provision, we aim for pupils to:
- write confidently and independently for a range of purposes and audiences;
- spell accurately, applying phonics knowledge and spelling rules appropriately;
- develop fluent, legible handwriting;
- take pride in their written work and understand how to improve it;
- be well equipped with the writing skills needed for secondary education and beyond.
